Fleeing Bluthen (the antagonists) hunting groups, Sandrea (the heroine), and a secondary character, T’Hargen (the hero’s long lost brother) have taken refuge in the house of a family recently murdered by the Bluthen. Sandrea has just been secretly adopted by the family’s empathic pet.<\/i><\/p>\n


\n<\/i>Wooden bench tops and cupboards gleamed with silver speckled, dark grey elegance.<\/div>\n

\u201cWhat, no food replicators?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI beg your pardon?\u201d<\/p>\n

She flapped a hand at him. \u201cNever mind. Long story.\u201d<\/p>\n

A quizzical frown crossed his brow. \u201cThis planet is recognized as an agricultural haven. People come here to pursue a simple life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs that what you did?\u201d<\/p>\n

He opened cupboards and drawers and pulled out plates and cutlery. Long strides took him to a refrigeration unit where he withdrew an assortment of food. A couple of minutes later, he placed a loaded plate on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. Sit,\u201d he ordered.<\/p>\n

Okay, I won\u2019t pry, not my business.<\/p>\n

She stared down at the repast and an image of three fresh graves sucker-punched her vision. Her appetite fled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey would have been disappointed had we refused their hospitality,\u201d T\u2019Hargen murmured, \u201cshould they have been here to receive us.\u201d<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s supposed to make it easier?<\/p>\n

Oddly enough, it did. She would not disrespect this last generosity of the unknown family. She sat and speared a piece of fish with a two-pronged forked. A warm, strong, moist tongue flicked against the inner crook of her elbow.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get anxious, I\u2019ll feed you.<\/p>\n

T\u2019Hargen seated himself across the table from her with his own plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know . . . Did they have any pets?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

T\u2019Hargen stared at her as though she\u2019d suggested the family indulged in the kind of activities that took place only when the planets aligned, under cover of darkness and involving naked skin, prosthetics, and oil. Possibly feathers.<\/p>\n

Or goat leggings.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch as?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

She lifted a shoulder. \u201cI don\u2019t know. What sorts of pets are kept on this planet?\u201d<\/p>\n

His lids lowered then rose with his eyebrows. \u201cPets are not useful on a farm.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAh, I see.\u201d Got news for you, T\u2019Hargen, pets are always useful.<\/p>\n

She picked up a piece of fish in her fingers, placed it in her mouth, and bit off a portion.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of the locals have not objected to caped lizards taking up residence in their external storage sheds. They keep the vermin down,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you see one, though, keep away from it. They\u2019re extremely dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah, they\u2019ll steal your heart with just one emerald-eyed glance.<\/p>\n
