He leaned on it for a minute and said abruptly, \u201cI\u2019ll make tea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I sat numbly on the bed and watched him boil water. My mind was horribly blank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere,\u201d he pushed a mug of tea into my hands and sat down, wrapping his arms around the back of the chair and staring at me expectantly. \u201cSo?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a long story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glared at him. I could lie, but for some reason, I couldn\u2019t bring myself to do it. I had been running for so long, and suddenly, I couldn\u2019t take another step. Before I had even tried to consider what might happen if I told him the truth, words spilled from my\u00a0mouth.<\/p>\n<p>He sat in silence, nodding occasionally as I told him everything. Flashes of the ball, Lavena, Father, King Rowan\u2019s plan, the sickness, the recovery, the elves, the monsters with red eyes, and Mora all sped through my brain and out of my mouth. His eyes darkened at the mention of Mora and his mouth tightened, but he didn\u2019t stop my narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I just saw Sir William Shanklin tell King Rowan what he learned from Mora and now he\u2019s looking for me. He\u2019ll use me to find them, I\u2019m sure of it\u2014that is if Mora doesn\u2019t get to me first. But I don\u2019t know where the unicorns are and I\u2019m tired of running!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ian rose from his chair and walked to a grimy window with his back to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll just have to find them then, won\u2019t we,\u201d he said finally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned to me, his face set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unicorns. We\u2019ve got to find them. You\u2019re the only one who can talk to them, so you\u2019re the only one who can warn them. We\u2019ll have to leave now though. I\u2019m sure King Rowan will have the whole city searched by mornin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, but what\u2019s with all this we business?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat? Didn\u2019t you know? I\u2019m coming with you.\u201d Ian grabbed a sack, walked to the door, opened it and headed down the hall as I followed him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dear Leah, I don\u2019t believe you\u2019ve had the pleasure of meeting my stubborn side,\u201d he said with a smile as he started down the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut\u2014but what about your future and all that?\u201d I asked desperately as I hurried to catch up with him.<\/p>\n<div>\u201cMy mother gave me one piece of advice as I left our humble home,\u201d Ian said conversationally, \u201cShe said, \u2018Don\u2019t you follow anything mysterious!\u2019 And you, Leah, are the most mysterious thing I\u2019ve ever met.\u201d\u201cBut your mother told you not to!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We were outside once again and mounting our horses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, and you might also need to know that I always do the exact opposite of what my mother wants,\u201d Ian said, and with that he started off at a gallop, with Iris and I following in his wake.<\/p>\n<p>Find more from M.L.
