In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/places\/canada\/\">Canada<\/a>, however, where the company is based, it\u2019s thought to be the market-share leader. It was acquired near the end of last year by<a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/rakuten\/\">Rakuten<\/a>, a company considered the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2011\/kobo-ceo-rakuten-is-amazon-of-japan-to-invest-in-kobo\/\">Amazon of Japan<\/a>,\u201d and has<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2012\/rakuten-sells-100000-kobo-e-readers-in-japan-not-without-problems\/\">started<\/a>\u00a0to build an ebook business there\u00a0 (for what it\u2019s worth:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2012\/world-catching-up-to-u-s-in-e-book-buying-habits-study-says\/\">a hard-to-crack market that isn\u2019t promising for ebook publishers<\/a>despite being one of the largest economies in the world with a very literate and technological population). In other countries, like the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2012\/kobo-devices-to-be-sold-in-100-whsmith-shops-in-uk\/\">UK<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2012\/kobo-launches-in-south-africa\/\">South Africa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalbookworld.com\/2012\/kobo-inks-deals-with-new-zealand-booksellers\/\">New Zealand<\/a>, Kobo has a presence and is one of the only\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/store.digitalbookworld.com\/opportunities-and-challenges-in-expanding-ebook-publishing-internationally-webcast?lid=jgdbwar120512\">international players<\/a>. Kobo is now in more than a dozen countries and is aggressively adding more.<\/div>\n<p><span>This little upstart from Canada is trying to compete with the likes of Amazon,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/google\/\">Google<\/a><span>,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/apple\/\">Apple<\/a><span>\u00a0and Barnes &#038;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/companies\/noble\/\">Noble<\/a><span>&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Forbes) Kobo is the major player in the ebook world that you\u2019ve never heard of.
