I looked back up at the tall stranger, and feeling one of us needed to say something, I took a breath and said, \u201cThank you for helping me, and I am very grateful, but who exactly are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled, forcing the corners of his eyes to crinkle.\u00a0 I had to look away.\u00a0 Why couldn\u2019t the boys at school be this attractive?\u00a0 It might make their taunts more bearable.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were right in guessing who I was earlier,\u201d he said, standing up once again.<\/p>\n

I had to crane my neck to keep an eye on his face. \u00a0Even though he had the charm of a well-versed movie star, there was no way I was going to trust him.\u00a0 To wake up from a dream and find myself in the middle of the forest, surrounded by the living corpses of dogs, then to have him appear out of nowhere and chase them off with superhuman speed?\u00a0 Yeah, that was normal.\u00a0 Right.<\/p>\n

He took a deep breath then ran both hands through his thick hair.\u00a0 I watched him carefully, not sure what his next move would be.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeghan, I\u2019m afraid we\u2019ve met under unsavory circumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced down at me with those dark eyes.\u00a0 \u201cOur first meeting wasn\u2019t supposed to go this way.\u00a0 Those hounds,\u201d he paused and grimaced, \u201clet\u2019s just say it was my job to take care of them earlier, and they slipped past me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked, feeling myself return to my previous stupor.\u00a0 What was he talking about?\u00a0 He knew about those horrible dogs?\u00a0 It was his job to take care of them?\u00a0 What did that mean?\u00a0 And most importantly, how did he know my name?<\/p>\n

I felt ill, as if I were going to throw up.\u00a0 I tried to stand, letting the trench coat slip off of me.\u00a0 All of a sudden it felt like a net meant to trap me like a bird.<\/p>\n

\u201cMeghan,\u201d he said, reaching out.<\/p>\n

But I cringed away from him, and offered him his coat with a shaky hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you again, but I really should get back home.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot on your own Meghan, not with those hounds still lurking around these trees somewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice had deepened and that only made my stomach churn more.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease,\u201d I whispered, feeling the first prickle of tears at the corners of my eyes, \u201cplease, I just want to get home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suddenly he stiffened and his gaze intensified.\u00a0 \u201cYou are afraid of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a statement, not a question.\u00a0 I knew I was doomed then.\u00a0 Wasn\u2019t it true that if a victim revealed to her attacker just how terrified she was, then she had already lost the game?\u00a0 Sure, he had chased off those dogs, but maybe only to keep me whole so he could take me off to some bomb shelter somewhere to torture me slowly.\u00a0 I shivered both from the return of the autumn cold and from the knowledge that I was completely at his mercy at this point.<\/p>\n

The man merely sighed deeply and said, \u201cI fouled this up completely, but I\u2019ll make it up to you somehow.\u00a0 Right now, however, I think it is best if you forget most of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He held up his right arm, palm out, as if he was planning to hit me with some kung fu move.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d \u00a0The panic in my voice matched the racing of my heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow, this will seem like a dream, but in a week\u2019s time I will send Fergus to you.\u00a0 Follow him, and I will introduce myself properly, at a more reasonable time of day.\u00a0 Then I\u2019ll explain everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at his hand as he moved closer, wondering if I should try and fight him off if he reached for me.\u00a0 My mind seemed to grow fuzzy, my vision blurred.<\/p>\n

Just before I passed out, I managed a barely audible, \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can call me Cade, but you won\u2019t remember this, so it doesn\u2019t matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then I was swallowed by darkness.<\/p>\n
