They use different phrases, according to their age, education, background and personality. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Whenever one of your characters says something &#8211; even if it&#8217;s just a greeting or thanks &#8211; let their personality shine through. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Here are four different characters talking about the same things:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><a name=\"more\"><\/a><\/div>\n<div><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Annie is self-centred.\u00a0 <\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">She begins everything she says with \u201cI&#8230;\u201d The words \u201cme\u201d, \u201cmy\u201d, \u201cmine\u201d also feature a lot in her conversation. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I&#8217;m late. I had to wait a precious hour in a queue, as if I didn&#8217;t have more important things to do.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI tell you, I&#8217;ve never been so frightened in my life. This was my home, my shelter, my everything. I stood there watching my belongings go up in flames, and my memories with it. My husband was as helpless as I. Her conversations contain \u201crather\u201d \u201cquite\u201d \u201csomewhat\u201d, \u201cI would like to say\u201d, \u201cmaybe\u201d, \u201cOn the other hand\u201d, \u201cIf I may say so\u201d, \u201cForgive me for being so outspoken, but\u201d, \u201cThis may sound strange, but\u201d, \u201cI think that perhaps\u201d, \u201cMore or less\u201d, \u201csort of\u201d, \u201cpossibly\u201d, \u201cor so\u201d. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I&#8217;m rather late. There was quite a queue, maybe an hour.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cThe fire was quite fierce, and spread rather quickly. We all got out more or less in time, but if I may say so, we were somewhat shaken.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Claudie is gushing, effusive, and highly strung.<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">She talks in superlatives: \u201cthe cutest\u201d, \u201cthe worst\u201d, \u201cthe most terrifying\u201d, with additions of \u201cabsolutely\u201d, \u201ctotally\u201d, \u201ccompletely\u201d, \u201cutterly\u201d, \u201cever\u201d, \u201cnever\u201d, \u201cforever.\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cI&#8217;m soooo sorry I&#8217;m late. The queue there was absolutely appalling, and I had to wait forever and ever.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cIt was absolutely horrifying, the worst nightmare. There was this unbelievably tremendous heat, the hugest flames you&#8217;ve ever seen, and the biggest column of the darkest smoke. It went on forever and ever, and I lost absolutely everything. It was utterly devastating.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Dorrie is a bossy charge-taker.<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">She phrases almost anything as an order: \u201cDo this.\u201d \u201cTake that.\u201d \u201cYou mustn&#8217;t think like that.\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cDon&#8217;t think I&#8217;m late on purpose. Imagine standing in a queue for an hour.\u201d <\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span lang=\"EN-GB\">\u201cImagine the flames, the smoke, the heat. Believe me: nobody could have saved anything. Never let your own kids play with matches.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Beginners sometimes invent speech patterns and graft them on the characters. The result can be clunky and unnatural, and call attention to itself. Instead, think of how a character&#8217;s personality trait shows in the way they speak. That&#8217;s subtler, funnier, more realistic. <\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Exercise <\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-GB\">Choose a speech pattern that reflects an aspect of a character&#8217;s personality. Apply the pattern to something the character says.
