A muscle in Dane\u2019s jaw rippled. \u201cWe must move faster. The longer she\u2019s alone, the more likely it is she\u2019ll encounter something dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s done well enough so far, no thanks to you,\u201d Joe muttered.<\/p>\n

Dane peered at Joe with narrowed eyes. \u201cWhat\u2019s that supposed to mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve shown your distaste for Heather upon more than one occasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would never let my personal feelings interfere with my duty to protect the child,\u201d Dane exploded.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally? Then why is she lost?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dane hands formed fists at his side. As the two men squared off, Shimmer stepped in between. \u201cJovander, I\u2019ve known Dane much longer than you have. You accuse him unjustly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is so,\u201d Manny concurred.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, no. Don\u2019t bother to defend me. It won\u2019t make a difference. Jovander Chance has a deep seated resentment toward the royal class and doesn\u2019t believe we could ever act unselfishly,\u201d Dane scoffed.<\/p>\n

\u201cForgive me for saying so, but this whole quest is selfish!\u201d Joe yelled. \u201cIf it succeeds, you Ormvalders resume ruling the kingdom. Heather gets nothing except for a pat on the back. She\u2019s the only one of us here who has acted in an unselfish manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve acted unselfishly too, Joe,\u201d Manny said.<\/p>\n

Dane smirked. \u201cNo, he hasn\u2019t. Haven\u2019t you noticed? Young Joe is quite taken with the lass.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joe flushed bright red. \u201cDon\u2019t act so smug, Your Highness. I\u2019ve seen the way you look at her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst you practically accuse me of doing her in, and now you accuse me of having designs on the woman?\u201d Dane thundered. \u201cMake up your mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst you call her a child, and now a woman?\u201d Joe pointed out. \u201cYou should make up your own mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

A long, smoldering silence followed in which nobody spoke.<\/p>\n
