\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d I asked and glanced over to where Tatiana looked, afraid her father might be storming down the beach towards us. Instead, a red Jeep rolled over the ridge and down the rocky path that separated our neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

She tsked. \u201cWhat does he want?\u201d<\/p>\n

My mouth parched as I caught a glimpse of Tatchi\u2019s twin brother through his windshield. He wore his usual black baseball hat, and looked nothing short of adorable.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s coming here?\u201d My voice cracked.
\n
\n\u201cApparently.\u201d She pressed her brows together and looked toward her house. \u201cLet me find out what he wants.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fin parked and got out before she could intercept him.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, Ash,\u201d he called out with a wave.<\/p>\n

My stomach flipped into a knot as I smiled and waved back.<\/p>\n

They argued for a minute, but I didn\u2019t catch what about. I stood, trying not to gawk, as I shamelessly adored his broad shoulders and beautiful blonde hair. Under the bill would be his piercing blue eyes fringed with paintbrush lashes\u2014the ones that always melted my knees.<\/p>\n

My crush started years ago, right after we\u2019d met when we were ten\u2014right on this beach. With a deep breath, I tried to relax and not dream of a relationship that probably wouldn\u2019t be. As far as I knew, he didn\u2019t think much of me beyond meaningless flirting.<\/p>\n

Tatchi threw her hands in the air and stormed back in my direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cDrama on the home front. I have to go,\u201d she mumbled as she snagged her blanket off the sand. \u201cSorry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIs everything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fin watched us, which made me even more nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, it should be fine. I\u2019ll try to call later.\u201d She smiled and gave me a hug. But more of an, \u201cI\u2019m leaving for a trip and saying goodbye,\u201d tighter kind of hug. I grimaced, unsure what to say.<\/p>\n

She left with a sigh and headed toward their house, brushing past Fin without even a look. Once she was out of view, Fin turned and instead of going back to his Jeep, he walked towards me. My pulse quickened.<\/p>\n

FIN<\/p>\n

Ashlyn stood awkwardly as I approached. Her curvy hips and wavy red hair took my breath away. For a moment, I caught her scent and hummed\u2014honeysuckle with just a hint of chlorine from her morning swim. Briefly, I imagined us playing in the water. She\u2019d give me a run for my money in a race.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Her green eyes darted away. \u201cNot much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry I interrupted\u2014\u201d I pointed towards the imprint of my sister\u2019s towel in the sand.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh,\u201d she said with a gulp and a smile, \u201cit\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pressed her lips together and suddenly all I wanted to do was kiss her right then and there. I took a deep breath and glanced at my feet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIs school going good?\u201d I asked, kicking a rock.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d She shrugged and then shot me that look\u2014one with a hint of yearning behind it. I couldn\u2019t help myself. I stepped forward and cupped her cheek. Her skin was soft as a rose petal, but within her startled eyes I caught my reflection\u2014my very selfish expression.<\/p>\n

Her whole life flashed before me. This kiss I desired to give her would change everything\u2014her dreams, her life with her family, her future. Innocent and trusting, she closed her eyes and tilted her chin upward in anticipation anyway. My soul protested, but I did the only thing I could\u2014the responsible thing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got something on your cheek,\u201d I said, wiping my thumb over her skin.<\/p>\n

She opened her eyes and pulled away, her cheeks reddening. \u201cI do?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped back and grimaced at myself. I was being one of those guys, the jerk who led girls on and toyed with their emotions.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m going to go,\u201d she said, rubbing her hand where I\u2019d touched, and faked a smile. \u201cSee ya later.\u201d<\/p>\n

She quickly stumbled up the path towards her Grandmother\u2019s house before I could comment, but I heard what she said under her breath. \u201cI\u2019m so stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n
